Damn database problems

Damn database problems

Postby grylliade » 05 May 2010, 14:28

We are, apparently, having major problems with the Drupal database again. I'd been planning on moving the site over the weekend, but it seems that Drupal has forced my hand. Right now, the old site is at grylliade.org/drupal, but it's not up, and until I can figure out what the hell could have gone wrong it won't be; I don't want to piss off Pair too much with constantly causing problems on one of their database servers. This is, incidentally, another good reason for switching -- I have no fucking clue what could be causing problems with the database, and as of right now it goes down about once a month. So sign up on phpBB, and unless something major happens this is where we'll be for the forseeable future.

Meet the new site.....better than the old site, one hopes.

You guys have problems? I just won the internet on the old site and no one will ever know.

No, phpBB just gives them default accounts so that you can restrict what they can do on your forums. I was wondering if they were visible to average users; I might hide them.

Will there be secret forums where we can have secret threads discussing secret things in secret?

And can I copy my avatar off the old forum onto this one?

There are such secret locations, and I'm sure you'll be added to 'em once David and/or Ellie spot that you're here.

This may only be me, but if you access this site by going straight to the old forum URL, it is hella broken. Might be worth a rewrite rule to pop the user up to /.

by that I mean going to grylliade.org/forum not just grylliade.org. I never went to the home page.

Probably because I'm doing something dumb or dumbly failing to do something, I find a message box in some of these new threads but no such box in others. What gives? [Firesign Theatre] Other than Nancy. [/Firesign]

There's a button on the bottom of the page that opens a quick reply message box. That's probably what you're seeing. I might have some weird configuration related to that that I didn't realize I had set; I'll check.

Some threads have the "quick reply" and some don't. This one doesn't. At least in my world.

It looks like it depends on where you enter the thread from. If you enter from the forum, the quick reply button is there, if you enter from "View new/unread/active posts" it doesn't. Very curious.

It doth appear that, verily, thou must post in British English to be able to use all of the themes correctly. I say, old chap, it is a most peculiar thing, especially when the buttons have none of your American misspellings on them. I shall look under the bonnet to find the images and such.

And I gotta say, I wanna murder whoever wrote some of the user interface stuff. Specifically, when I want to add one of y'all to the regular posters group (that lets you into the super-secret clubhouse), I have to click on a link to "administrate user." Has no one there ever heard of the verb "administer"? Seriously! Is it so hard to have "administer user"? Not that that's much better, admittedly.

On the other hand, it would be weird to hear someone speaking of something "self-destroying," or something having a "self-destroy" button, which would be the proper back formations of "self-destruction."

Here 'tis. I used google image search for "Grylliade Jennifer" to drag it up.

That should be fixed (my first foray into using a .htaccess file! Hooray!). If anyone can give me the URL for the post tracker (which I know many of you used to access the old forums, for good reason), I'll put that in the file as well, to make sure anyone else who used that gets redirected as well.
