I started to post this in the TV/Film category, but it's really more book-related than TV related.
Anywho, Did anybody else catch Greg Bear on the Daily Show last week? It ends up being a little light on substance, but he says some interesting things.

Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
Slightly off-topic: on the message boards where Ellie and I met [Sluggy Freelance's forums, if anyone's curious], one of the posters there was Greg Bear's teenage daughter. Which made her Poul Anderson's granddaughter. She'd actually accepted a Hugo award in her father's or grandfather's name, or something like that. Nice kid, but very precocious. I was so envious that she'd gotten to meet Poul Anderson.

Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
She grew out of the precocious bit and ended up becoming a regular likeable hobbit-porn-writing geek girl teenager.
Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
Huh. I didn't know that Bear was related to Anderson.
He's another of those who's suffered from my inability to distinguish between people who have only vaguely similar names. I've never read any Poul Anderson becuase I didn't like Gateway. O_o

Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
I am constantly confusing Greg Bear with Gregory Benford.
"My intellect is gigantic, monstrous, terrifying."
Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
Oh yeah. And Raisin Bran with David Brin.

Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
He married Anderson's daughter, so indirectly.
You're thinking of Frederick Pohl. Which might be your point, now that I think about it.
If you get a chance, find "No Truce with Kings," one of his short stories. Anderson was one of those stiff-necked old sci fi writers, the old generation where everyone was basically libertarian (except for Asimov, of course). Anderson's best stuff really celebrates libertarianism, and "No Truce with Kings" is one of the best examples of that.

Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
Clarke was ever a libertarian?
I guess "The Martian Way" was slightly libertarian, but otherwise?

Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
I'm trying to think of Clarke's views on government. He liked democracy and civil liberties, but I don't remember much at all about size. Admittedly, I haven't read anything by him in years.
Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
He was usually a pretty big socialist, IIRC. He just thought that a bunch of engineers would run things and there'd be no real disputes.
In other words, he wasn't good with people, but you didn't read his books for the characterization. ;)
This is a personal problem. There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable use of high explosives. This is not one of those exceptions.
Re: Greg Bear on the Daily Show
I remember a detail in Imperial Earth (?) involving the US presidential process changed to lottery among smart, responsible people who didn't want political office.
