All you zombie lovers

What is it about libertarianism and zombie movies? Isn't it Tim Cavanaugh who is a big fan? And didn't some people here discuss a book called The Zombie Survival Guide?

Anyway, the same guy recently published World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks.

Modeled after Studs Terkel's oral history of World War II, it gives a multiple eyewitness account of the recent global conflict between humanity and the living dead, including the discovery of the first zombie "Patient Zero" in China (himself thought to be the legacy of early zombie experiments by Imperial Japan), the disastrous Battle of Yonkers, and the cold-blooded Redeker Plan that is mankind's only hope for survival.

I just got my April issue of Liberty magazine, which includes a review of the book, and although I am not a real zombie fan, it does look like an interesting bit of science fiction. I just wanted to mention it.

I listened to the abridged audiobook, and enjoyed it. Brooks, son of Mel, wears his New Deal Democrat politics on his shoulder, and in some parts it infects the narrative. (Pun intended.) Other than plausibility questions, it's pretty enjoyable though. FWIW, the zombies are Romero-type slow movers, though you have to be bitten to become one.

The audiobook cast is pretty good, and it includes non other than Luke Skywalker as a G.I and Alan Alda as some political figure (see New Deal Democrat politics).

You should see the discussion threads about zombies on gun forums. Holy moly.

Fun, though.

I've got a copy of "The Zombie Survival Guide" and it's a hoot.

I tend to think of zombie movies as "the thinking man's horror scenario."

They usually have characters that aren't utter dolts, eg "I'm going to split off from the group and go explore the deep dark cave, looking for the supernatural guy with the machete. No doubt the only equipment I need is this here handy-dandy flashlight."

Lots of geeks like zombie movies, and a lot of libertarians are geeks or have some geeky interests.

I always figured that it had something to do with the suspicion that most people already are zombies.

That's what I loved about Shaun of the Dead. The understandable way that the characters managed not to notice that everyone around them were turning into zombies. Also, the way that it was sometimes hard to tell which people were the zombies.
