I think of things like this and the woman left without food or water over a weekend in a county jail... If we were a smarter civilization, we'd be a Hell of a lot less inclined to put people in custody - and in the custody of idiots - on the smallest pretexts.

I hope every single guard who ignored the man's pleas dies as painful and lonely a death. Only more slowly, and with the foreknowledge that one's family would have to helplessly watch it.

Maybe...I doubt that the Chinese, Irish, etc in the 1800s felt we were ever the good guys.
Not that past behavior is a justification, and this does greatly sadden me, but just to put it in perspective, I think things in the immigrant realm are better...even if that issue is more codified than it needs to be.
Someday if Jennifer serves on a jury, I would like to see her rise up in the middle of the trial and yell, "No, you're out of water! And you're out of water! They're out of water! This whole trial is out of water!". - Stevo Darkly-

While I wish every administrator involved with this a lingering painful death while utterly alone except for a Chinese guy periodically coming by to say "Ha-ha!" a la Nelson, I realistically would support jail time for some of them. Not that I think that's any more realistic than their getting their just desserts. As Jennifer said, they'll get commendations.
Some days I want to say "fuck it" and become part of the ruling class and just shed my humanity.
This is a personal problem. There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable use of high explosives. This is not one of those exceptions.

I am going to say one minor thing in defense of the guards: if the span of time between the guy starting to complain of back pain and dying was only four months, I doubt that anyone could have saved him, and he would have died anyway. That's not to minimize his suffering, or the generally thoughtless treatment he received.

The fact still remains that, had the guards behaved like human beings and let him have medical treatment, he would have lived out his last days under medication to dull his pain, and his family would have had the chance to come to grips with their loss while he was still there to say goodbye to.

But historical context matters. We all know the US never lived up to its advertised ideal of "liberty and justice for all," but for most of our history we were at least drawing always closer to it. Now we're moving away from it.
It's like if they passed a law stating that women but not men had to pay a poll tax or pass a literacy test before voting -- modern American women would still be better off than pre-1920 women, but I'd still view this as a very ominous sign of the future, and not take comfort in the thought "Hey, I'm still better off than I'd've been 100 years ago!"
