... opposition councillors [sic] said it was "reminiscent of Benito Mussolini's edict of the 1920's which banned groups of five or more people".
See there? The new ban is for three or more, whereas Mussolini's edict permitted groups of four, thereby permitting outdoors do-wop groups and barbershop quartets! I've often thought Mussolini's chief problem was that he just fell in with a bad sort. *grin*
I'm not terribly surprised. Really, fascism never went away in Italy. I think the thing is that Italian fascism was never the all-encompassing cultural obsession it was in Germany, and they kind of kicked out the fascists on their own, so they never got "de-fascized" - but this left fascism as a viable strain within the body politic.
It also doesn't really help that the CIA spent a good 30 odd years after WWII systematically crushing any viable leftist movements that came down the pike, thereby greatly increasing the strength of the far-right political parties, many of which had (at the very least) fascist tendencies. Check out Operation Gladio if you need any more evidence that we were every bit as immoral as the Soviets were in our international policy.

The important thing here to remember is that Benito Mussolini's granddaughter Alessandra Mussolini is still around --- and if she were
dictatress of Italy, she would probably make sure that the trains ran ... topless. (Source: Google image search with "safe search" filter turned off.)

An article on fascism in Europe?
I feel the need for a Michael Moynihan blog post and some comments by Guy Montag.
