Wall-E

I saw this movie last weekend with my daughter. It's a great movie. Maybe not the best Pixar I have seen, but very entertaining.

It actually resembles Idiocracy a bit in the way the movie is set up, plus a big part of the movie is one long fat joke. Apparently a bunch of right-wing blowhards like Glenn Back and Jonah Goldberg are upset about the film because they feel it is environmentalist propaganda.

Can these people not take a joke? The Ant Bully was a leftist film as was The Last Mimsy and i genuinely hated those films. This film was satire and I thought it was quite funny.

I'm sure if Bambi came out today those same blowhards would hate it too. They'd bitch about the Gaia religion, how it advocates for gun control and environmentalism.

Re: Wall-E

To be fair to Jonah Goldberg, while he did somewhat complain about it having environmentalist themes, he still referred to it as an "excellent" film.

A lot of people did complain about Bambi. IIRC, in the original, the bad humans were at least poachers; in the movie, they're simply hunters. Way to make the overgrown rats the cuddly good guys and the deer hunters the bad guys.

All the reviews I've seen speak highly of it. Still, I'm waiting for the Constant Viewer™ take on it before I part with my hard eaned shekels.

I liked the movie, and the only way you can complain about the "environmentalist" themes is if you're the type who runs around looking for reasons to take offense.

I object to that, Jennifer!

If you've got a movie set in a far distant future where humanity long since abandoned our planet, I don't think it's possible to come up with a "reason we had to leave Earth" that couldn't be interpreted as a political message of some sort.

I see the promos and it just makes me think of "Howard the Duck".

As far as I can tell, Lucas had nothing to do with Wall-E. Shannon and I took Gid to see it last Thursday afternoon, after the company barbeque. It was a fun movie, and we're glad we saw it.

At this point, Pixar could say "we're doing a movie based on a plant that just sits there on a windowsill for three hours doing nothing" and I'd pay full price to see it on opening weekend.

Pixar's Plant would undoubtedly teach me how to laugh and love again. I preemptively give Plant 5 stars!

Re: Wall-E

Ignoring all of the gee-whiz computer magic that Pixar is rightly noted for, these guys just know how to tell a story. You care about the characters and the plots are simple and effective. The folks at Pixar could probably make an enjoyable film with not much more than a super 8 camera, a large garage and half a ton of paper mache.

You only have to see Shark Tale to realize that quality computer animation does not guarantee a watchable movie.
