This evening, in Philly, I attended broadway musical The Color Purple. It was just wonderful. A story about love. The experience was exhilarating. Highly recommended.

When I learned it was Winfrey behind the thing, I was not very impressed. But, then, the show itself was excellent.

The Color Purple is a novel by Alice Walker that was made into a movie in the mid-80s.
In the movie version, Oprah Winfrey played a big role and it was one of the things that really raised her national profile in the US.

Thanks. I did not know that Winfrey ever acted. I was suspicious of the thing when I learned Oprah is somehow involved in the show. But, yeah, it was really good. And I did know it was a novel. My friend who went to the show with me mentioned it and said it is surprising that a novel written so long ago could actually include homosexuality* in the story etc. But anyways, that was a good show. Clearly I liked it :-)

Yes, ages ago, back in Ye Olde 1980s we hardly even knew there were such things as homosexuals. Plus, of course, it's hard to write words like homosexual and lesbian with a goose quill pen.
*sigh*
In fact, just as in the 50s and 60s publishers discovered people like James Baldwin (Oh look! That Negro can actually write books!), it would have been shocking if there weren't novels in the 1980s with homosexual episodes in them as that is the decade in which homosexuality went from being "the love that dare not speak its name" to "the love that never shuts its f*cking mouth."
Oh and BTW, Winfrey is actually a very good actress and if you haven't seen the movie, you should.

Yeah you're right. It was written in 1983. I did not realize it was written in the 80s. I thought may be the 50s. But now, I am not as surprised.

I liked the TV version (where I first saw Jim Carrey). In Living Color Purple.
