Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
One day, I may read something by Raimondo that won't contain multiple bits that jolt me out of the piece to think, "OK, creepy!" about him.

Right now, somewhere in the US, the Anarchrist is buying a katana from a local mall and formulating his plan to
self-immolatecommit seppuku in front of a crowd of thousands.A parasite feeding on bacteria growing on fungus growing on cow excrement? The only way the parasitic chain could get any longer would be if the cow excrement worked for the government.

Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
nah, what mishima did was wholly within an antiquated template, with a layer of ridiculousness. it would be like, hmmm...maybe a young conservative taking up a sort of homoerotic teddy roosevelt rough riders (har har) turn of the century military thing? i don't know if there is any real equivalence in this culture for that sort of thing. we move too fast here.
eric - what was creepy about that? i thought it was decidedly un-creepy. (mishima was a *weird dude* even by japanese standards.)

Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
Not Mishima himself, but Raimondo. In particular, the offhand remark about homosexuality being one of Mishima's perversions and the one-handed-typing tone of the last section as Raimondo talks about a right-wing guy preaching to the sheeple and then killing himself in the face of their failure to follow him.
EDIT: Just another big reminder of why I don't want to be associated with the guy any more than with Reynolds.
Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
well, mishima referred to it as a kind of perversion as well, just one that he accepted (on and off).
i thought the end was rather nice, myself.

Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
*shrug* Raimondo just struck me as expressing his own opinion and reactions, not quoting or trying to present Mishima's outlook, in a number of places; I found those reactions creepy.
If that wasn't his intention, then my opinion of his writing goes down. :)
Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
Isn't Raimondo a know homosexual (NTTAWWT)?
Of course, once plastic mining becomes really common, I hope most of the work will be done by robots, so that human miners won't suffer from styrene lung or get trapped in huge spork collapses.-Stevo Darkly
Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
*looks it up* Looks like he is openly gay, actually. I honestly wouldn't have guessed that from what little I've seen from him on the subject; the things I'd read had a certain style to them that reminded me strongly of those Red/paleo writers who will talk about "homosexuals" in a detached way, then throw in a "despite their unGodly perversion, they deserve equal treatment" in the best case. I suppose it's the case of one's reaction to "who uses what words" biting em on the butt.
Good point to note, Sasuey.
Re: a decent piece on mishima by the prince of froth
raimondo's attitude is somewhat similar to mishima's in that regard.
i gave my copy of the sailor who fell from grace with the sea to a friend before i went to ireland; i wonder if i'll ever get it back.
