Torche! Torche is fucking awesome like crazy awesome in ways I have a very hard time describing. It's like all the best melodic elements of Pelican with the grunge-indie sensibility of the early Smashing Pumpkins and chugging merciless riffs a la The Sword and the vocal and instrumental energy of The Marshes. I mean, I'm seriously floored. Check out Meanderthal, their new album, post haste.

Isn't the Alan Parsons Project some sort of hovercraft?
You betcha! And some occasionally misogynistic hovercrafting, at that, if you take Eve (and especially its cover art) seriously. Being an old guy, I naturally think the earlier stuff is the best and I still listen to I, Robot and Pyramid occasionally. For those not in the know, Parsons previously engineered Dark Side of the Moon, and so his work was wildly popular with audiophiles back in the '70s, too.
Going through my music collection I found Helium and Mary Timony again, she's awesome and the Helium videos on youtube are like a mid-90s time machine.

I didn't care for the Silver Mount Zion album at all. I think I probably would like them more if they had continued on in the style of their first album.
The No Age album is fun but I doubt it's something I'll want to revisit a lot.

Trivium's "Ascendancy". Got it yesterday at a street fair - they had a good selection of semi-obscure stuff, and I was trying to remember what I'd heard on Live365 and liked. "Ascendancy" is OK. At its best, it's chunky, complex riffing and grooving reminiscent of Arch Enemy or Dimension Zero. At its worst, it's generic nu-metal. What's weird is that both of these can occur within the same song. "A Gunshot To The Head Of Trepidation" is probably the best track.
I've been listening to Live's old Throwing Copper CD. It has enough good songs on it that it's good to throw into the car CD player when you're on a long drive -- I listened to it during the 4-hour drive to the lake a few weekends ago.
It contains 80% awesome. Especially "Pillars of Davidson" and "White, Discussion" and especially "Lightning Crashes."

At one point during their set their singer draped himself in an American flag and made the rest of the band exit the stage so that he could do some weepy a capella posturing. It was the most grandiose display of self-absorption. It made me want to throw up. In fact, I didn't like their set. But their pretentious singer was, without question, the worst part.
EDIT: But I am glad you are gleaning some enjoyment of their recordings, Stevo. I didn't mean to sound so hateful of your band. That's just one of those instances that I'll always remember of how gag-inducing political posturing by celebrities can be.

Sigh. Alas, lots of good musicians and actors and artists are assholes, especially WRT their politics, so I'm not super-surprised. Their lyrics might make me throw up too if I could figure their meaning out completely, but either the words consists of subtle and oblique metaphors or else it's just free association imagery like old Kansas lyrics that doesn't actually mean anything specific. Probably somewhere in between.
EDIT: Also, I have to give them credit for having a hit song that has the word "placenta" in the second line. There aren't a lot of bands out there that can say that. Especially about one falling to the floor.

I've been listening to Loveless over the past few days to coincide with the My Bloody Valentine reunion. Blown a Wish has probably surpassed I Only Sleep as my favorite song. That Japancakes cover album from last year is also pretty good, even if it does at times sound like elevator music.
This video from one of their first reunion shows is awesome and hilarious:
Right at this moment? I'm listening to Atmosphere by Joy Division, Na Nanana by The Squalls, Strange Little Girl by The Stranglers, and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye by Marc Almond. In that order. And for dessert, I think something by The Smiths. Or The Clash. Or both.

I know I criticized ASMZ earlier in this thread, but I will confess that their live shows are still pretty great (or at least the one I just listened to). "Could've Moved Mountains" was probably my favorite song from the second album, but they've changed it around quite a bit (the middle section sounds a lot like Moya now) and it still sounds really good.
I am listening to a compilation of my most favorite music. Just finished listening to the Pink Floyd ones and by far my most favorite Pink Floyd songs are:
Wish You Were Here (has a personal story associated with it and this song is just precious)
Us and Them
On the Turning Away
Poles Apart
A Great Day For Freedom
Shine on You Crazy Diamond
There are many others I definitely like (e.g., The Wall), but these are the ones I am listening to now.

So I'm kinda based in La Jolla for now, although I'm in Manhattan Beach too...
...and San Diego always puts me in a Ragga state of mind... ...and I've been revisiting some of my old haunts. I was at the Shores earlier this week. I went to Rivermouth. They won't let you build bonfires down there anymore. I was in Pacific Beach and Solana. I got up the first time off Solana Beach when I was a kid... I haven't surfed in almost twenty years now. Damn.
Anyway, they play a lotta Reggae on the local radio down here. ...and there's this local band that I'm listening to. Yeah, they've been around for a long time, but "2 AM" seems to be big on the radio right now, and the band's coming to a town near you*. ...so straight outta Ocean Beach...
It's Slightly Stoopid. It's what I've been listening to.
*Unless you're in the Midwest. ...in which case I guess they aren't coming to a town near you. ...at least not in August. Do people in the Midwest listen to Regge?
If not, they should. ...sometimes. Sometimes nothing else will do.
2 in the morning, police knockin' at my door, what for?
Never know the reasons they be coming packin'
And then they're coming through i tell them "He just kick down my door"
Even though I'm on the floor with a gun to my head.
All the reason that I'm holdin' all the trees
And I gotta a lot a weed
They be spottin' me with infa-red
In the mood and I'm, " who the hell is you?"
Still they comin through, holdin up the innocent yeah.
Turbonegro! Kind of NWOBHM meets New York punk as interpreted by a bunch of Norwegians. Imagine Frank Zappa writing lyrics for music composed by the Clash, subsequently covered by early Def Leppard. No, I am not making this up.
I think they have sometimes gone by TRBNGR when it was adjudged preferable. Hey, even "Turbonegro" might be somewhat preferable to the un-Anglicized version of their name, "Turboneger".
Oh, and they completely intended the racial meaning, AFAICT. Partly because Norwegians just don't have the same history of racial awareness that USAnians do, and partly because they're just like that. I doubt they'd get much airplay anyway, given that a lot of their songs are about things like wiping your ass.
I was bored last night and so spent the night surfing around and letting the links take me where they may.
I ended up on the Sebadoh Mp3 site and downloaded the KVRX radio station concert. Great stuff and free for those who are looking for some folksy indie-rock.
I've been listening to what I think would be called American folk/roots. I really can't have enough of "Pretty Saro" and "A Roving on a Winter's Night". In fact, I'd like to ask you guys if you know exactly what genre of music these are (I was told folk/roots, but am not sure or need something more specific because folk/roots seems to be oo generic) and if you have more suggestions of similar songs.

ali: to explain, in america "folk" means one of three things, most likely -
1) traditional american music - stuff from way back when until the 1920s and 30s, when recording became feasible and suddenly an oral/aural tradition became a mass medium. can be anything from old, old blues, blueglass, african american roots music, gospel, stuff from appalacia, protest songs, wobbly fight songs and various combinations and hybrids; if it was around before recordings were around, it fits into there, most likely.
2) the folk revival of the 50s and 60s - bob dylan, seeger, woodie guthrie and related environs. someone more versed in this stuff can better explain it's connection to the first; my untrained ears hear more of the wobbly than the bluegrass, generally. this also sees the rise of documenters of americana, like the amazing harry smith and john fahey. (whose music i would highly recommend if you enjoy stripped down americana guitar)
3) "new folk" or "freak folk" or "new weird america"; takes folk music of the revival type mashed up against psych rock and other influences (see below) into a pile of weirdness and big flouncy peasant dresses. not really folk music but we ran out of adjectives in 1993.
i generally like some of this stuff, but it's heavier on the psych than americana for the most part. even americana-esque guitarists like ben chasny are more influenced by indian music and american psych than real folk music.
3a) there is an earlier manifestation called "apocalyptic folk" which came out of a lot of european industrial/experimental artists who went traditional. like a mixture of donovan and can, i guess.
word of caution: if it's called "heathen" there's a good chance it's white power/norse mythos type stuff.
second word of caution: most of it is terrible, but i do love current 93 and don't mind "what ends when symbols shatter?" by death in june. (he's a gay racist though so...yeah)

um, but still, have you heard either "pretty saro" and "a roving on a winter's night"? that's the stuff i like.
p.s. i am honoring you by writing all in small letters. in fact, you inspired me once and i gave an entire presentation at an aiaa conference (with air force people sitting in the audience) entirely in small letters. like everything. it felt good being able to confidently do something odd like that and, still, i think it came across very nicely.

I REALLY like this band. And they're coming to a town near you!
...unless you don't live in Portland, New York, Somerville, Mass., Waterbury, Conn., Providence or Montreal. ...in which case I guess they aren't coming to a town near you. ...at least they aren't scheduled to for the next couple of months or so. ...yet.
I don't know what it is, but I think it is a combination of the vocals, the fact that usually a group is singing as opposed to a single singer, and, I think because there is also a story being told.
I also like blue grass music a lot. Especially the stuff from down in KY. I hear that music a lot on local stations in upstate NY and VT. Very nice and relaxing.

I've been listening to Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy a lot lately. I don't know what it is, but something about the album really appeals to me. "The Man in the Long Black Coat" is especially good. The combination of Calvinism-influenced apocalyptic lyrics and 3/4 time makes for an amazing song.
the wife went to see the legendary pink dots last night. verdict: new material is fucking awful wank that makes their prog-laden fanbase* happy, but they also played a bunch of old stuff for the closer which made her very happy.
the new album, which i'm listening to now, is really sloppy and shitty. texture-wise, it's fine, but it sounds like something from 1981, and not in a good way. very, very repetitive and lyrically lazy.
*their fanbase is sadly really, really stupid. these are the people who thought ryan moore was the worst thing to happen to them, even if he was the only competent percussionist and bassist they've ever had, and by competent i mean fucking brilliant because the dude has ears of gold.

I think they were better in the 90s. Throwing Copper is rather awesome.
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
smacky --
"My intellect is gigantic, monstrous, terrifying."
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
Agreed on "placenta", thought I suspect the biology term high-mark was Shriekback managing to use "parthenogenesis" in a chorus. :)

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
I've been listening to Loveless over the past few days to coincide with the My Bloody Valentine reunion. Blown a Wish has probably surpassed I Only Sleep as my favorite song. That Japancakes cover album from last year is also pretty good, even if it does at times sound like elevator music.
This video from one of their first reunion shows is awesome and hilarious:

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
Right at this moment? I'm listening to Atmosphere by Joy Division, Na Nanana by The Squalls, Strange Little Girl by The Stranglers, and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye by Marc Almond. In that order. And for dessert, I think something by The Smiths. Or The Clash. Or both.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
I know I criticized ASMZ earlier in this thread, but I will confess that their live shows are still pretty great (or at least the one I just listened to). "Could've Moved Mountains" was probably my favorite song from the second album, but they've changed it around quite a bit (the middle section sounds a lot like Moya now) and it still sounds really good.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?

Check out 2 AM.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
Turbonegro! Kind of NWOBHM meets New York punk as interpreted by a bunch of Norwegians. Imagine Frank Zappa writing lyrics for music composed by the Clash, subsequently covered by early Def Leppard. No, I am not making this up.
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
...and imagine if they called themselves Superbeaner!
Yeah, I know, they probably didn't intend the racial undertones, but $20 says, if they ever get American airplay, it'll be under a modified name.
Turboblack. Turboafrican-american. Turbodude. Turboblanca. Turbonono.
...yeah, Turbonono!
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
I think they have sometimes gone by TRBNGR when it was adjudged preferable. Hey, even "Turbonegro" might be somewhat preferable to the un-Anglicized version of their name, "Turboneger".
Oh, and they completely intended the racial meaning, AFAICT. Partly because Norwegians just don't have the same history of racial awareness that USAnians do, and partly because they're just like that. I doubt they'd get much airplay anyway, given that a lot of their songs are about things like wiping your ass.
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
when it comes to comedic deathgrind, you basically have two choices: anal cunt or agoraphobic nosebleed.
agoraphobic nosebleed blows anal cunt out of the water in terms of musicianship and brutality, but ac is obviously far more offensive.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
I've been listening to what I think would be called American folk/roots. I really can't have enough of "Pretty Saro" and "A Roving on a Winter's Night". In fact, I'd like to ask you guys if you know exactly what genre of music these are (I was told folk/roots, but am not sure or need something more specific because folk/roots seems to be oo generic) and if you have more suggestions of similar songs.
"Discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes" -Marcel Proust
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
ali: to explain, in america "folk" means one of three things, most likely -
1) traditional american music - stuff from way back when until the 1920s and 30s, when recording became feasible and suddenly an oral/aural tradition became a mass medium. can be anything from old, old blues, blueglass, african american roots music, gospel, stuff from appalacia, protest songs, wobbly fight songs and various combinations and hybrids; if it was around before recordings were around, it fits into there, most likely.
(he's a gay racist though so...yeah)

and sometimes you get cirque du soleil assailing the western tradition by way of a folk-metal-showtunes extravaganza.
the european tradition, filtered through years of rock, metal, theatre and a thousand and one schoolyard beatings:

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
dhex- thanks. this is rich information.
um, but still, have you heard either "pretty saro" and "a roving on a winter's night"? that's the stuff i like.
p.s. i am honoring you by writing all in small letters. in fact, you inspired me once and i gave an entire presentation at an aiaa conference (with air force people sitting in the audience) entirely in small letters. like everything. it felt good being able to confidently do something odd like that and, still, i think it came across very nicely.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
oops. i forgot to mention that they'd all be category one folk.
you can do worse than the harry smith anthology of american music collection. i'm not a specialist so i'm not sure where you'd go after that.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
Thanks, dhex.
I am guessing smacky or DAR would know.

Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
I've been listening to Bob Dylan's Oh Mercy a lot lately. I don't know what it is, but something about the album really appeals to me. "The Man in the Long Black Coat" is especially good. The combination of Calvinism-influenced apocalyptic lyrics and 3/4 time makes for an amazing song.
Re: #4 What Have You Been Listening To?
the wife went to see the legendary pink dots last night. verdict: new material is fucking awful wank that makes their prog-laden fanbase* happy, but they also played a bunch of old stuff for the closer which made her very happy.
the new album, which i'm listening to now, is really sloppy and shitty. texture-wise, it's fine, but it sounds like something from 1981, and not in a good way. very, very repetitive and lyrically lazy.
*their fanbase is sadly really, really stupid. these are the people who thought ryan moore was the worst thing to happen to them, even if he was the only competent percussionist and bassist they've ever had, and by competent i mean fucking brilliant because the dude has ears of gold.

I saw the Legendary Pink Dots way back in 1991. The singer kept hitting on the girl I was with who was around 16 y.o.
It was a good show, but not great.
