This thread is a repository for cool animated films and videos!
Yesterday I saw the Best of the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2007. Here are a few of the short films that screened.
This one was my favorite by far, because the music is great, and I love stop-motion animation: The music video for UMO by OOIOO (featuring Yoshimi P-We of Boredoms):
I Met The Walrus - This won the Academy Award this year for Best Animated Short (this is a pretty grainy version, but it probably won't be on YouTube for much longer, anyway). This is an animated interview between John Lennon and a 14-year-old Beatles fan:
Teat Beat of Sex - This one is EXPLICIT, but kinda funny:
And now some films from the Best of the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2006:
Rabbit:
Who I Am and What I Want:
Game Over by Pes - This one is for anyone who ever played Atari:

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Sorry I don't know the incantations required to embed videos.
This might seem trite to you. It may strike you as too commercial, too predictable, and possibly even cheesy. If so, all I can say is, that one or more of the following is certainly true: You don't have a penis, You weren't 17 years of age in 1981, and you didn't tell your mother you were going to the bookstore but actually went to the movies where you engaged in interstate commerce for only like the tenth time in your life just before showtime.
seriously though, i think you're crazy on this. and you think i'm crazy. everybody wins! - dhex
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
As I said in the other thread, I just watched Heavy Metal for the first time as a result of that episode, and it is an awesome movie. Especially the part with Eugene Levy and Harold Ramis playing the aliens that abduct some girl.
But, as Deepak Chopra taught us, quantum physics means anything can happen at any time for no reason! Also, eat plenty of oatmeal, and animals never had a war... who's the real animal?

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
There's this somewhat old series of animations called Soft Outer Crust that are short, violent and hilarious.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
I remember when they tried to show Heavy Metal on "USA Up All Night" (on the USA Network). Of course, they had to cut out all the naughty parts. Which meant it was basically an incoherent string of savage jump cuts. If a similar treatment had been given to the Preamble of the Constitution, it would read like this:
We[JUMP CUT] States, in order to form a more [JUMP CUT] establish [JUMP CUT] tranquility, provide [JUMP CUT] general [JUMP CUT] , and secure[JUMP CUT], do [JUMP CUT] America.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
I thought that South Park episode was awesome, but like Warren, it might just be the nostalgia kicking in. For me, it was the local science fiction convention where I grew up, because it was a place where my parents had no problem letting me run around unsupervised, perhaps oblivious to the fact that they were showing the occasional R rated movies in the movie room. A great situation for a teenager.
There don't seem to be any clips of it up, but I just saw this weekend, for the first time, "Tales from the Far Side." Gary Larson did two shorts in the 90s that were fantastic, and they are available as a pair on DVD. Well worth getting.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
If you're looking to embed a YouTube video like the one above, look for a text box labeled "embed" if you're on its actual YouTube page. On embedded videos like the one above, click on the "menu" button to see the "embed" box. Copy the contents of the text box and paste it into a post. It'll look something like this:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Sh8RGjIscA&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7Sh8RGjIscA&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>Then, just make the post.

You thought right.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Yeah, that was really good, dead_elvis. Thanks for sharing.
I've seen a wall-art animation before, but it was only done on the inside of one room, in a house -- I've never seen it done outside on city walls before. I saw this documentary in March called "Bomb It!" which is about tagging and spray-paint artists. Apparently the police in Rio de Janeiro are so busy with other things that graffiti artists typically aren't bothered and are mostly allowed to do their thing. I don't know if that's also the case in Argentina, where this was made, or if the artist had to be sneaky about it and work quickly.
My only real objections to graffiti art are when it is done on private property, or when it involves violent turf-war type stuff. Other than that I've seen some pretty neat stuff.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Sadly, while we have a fair amount of graffiti in my neighborhood, none of it comes even close to being art. Nothing but retarded gang symbol tagging.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Yeah, same in Cleveland. Well, there are a couple cool pieces by this one artist but I can't remember if I ever found out the guy's name. But besides that one guy, there's this one ubiquitous tagger who puts his initials ("HEK") on everything. Pretty boring!

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
This reminds me of this idea from a while back- graffiti report cards you can print out yourself and stick up around your neighborhood:
"They civilize left, They civilize right
Till nothing is left, Till nothing is right"
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Not even the crazy-elaborate, multi-color lettering? Aw, man.
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
I don't recognize the usual gang in this, but this is the crap my fellow property owners put up with (well, they seem to put up with this, but if it were me it'd be painted over the next day):
To get back on topic, here's an animated commercial from the long long ago that reminds us that we've all come a long, long way (baby):
Not stunningly unusual animation, but for some reason it amuses me. Also amusing is the suggestion that Black Label would be appropriate to serve to "good company."

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
That is effing brilliant. I may have to print out some of those. Graffiti on my property would make me want to sit watch on the roof all night with a rifle, but I have seen some really good pieces on trains, abandoned buildings, bridges, etc.
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Perhaps some of you saw this on boingboing; it's worth downloading. An animated short in disney/pixar style (though maybe with a liitle more violence and scheisse), "Big Buck Bunny":
"They civilize left, They civilize right
Till nothing is left, Till nothing is right"

Here's a music video that features a singing lemon:

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Completely useless fact: I'm almost positive the instrument used in making the Orange video (which creeped me out at the time, thanks for the nightmares, Smacky) is an ARP 2500 or 2600, but I think those are definitely ARP oscillators making that weak triangle/sawtooth wave.
This is a personal problem. There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable use of high explosives. This is not one of those exceptions.
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Finally got around to watching "Big Buck Bunny" - thanks, dead_elvis! Anything with evil squirrels is OK by me.
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
I saw this link on Lew Rockwell:
Indicting fractional reserve banking using Duck Tales clips:
I can remember several economics and inflation themed episodes from Duck Tales. Heck, when I was a kid (I turn 30 in December), I actually learned about the concept of inflation specifically from Duck Tales (though the episode I learned about was different the one being featured).
I suppose a cartoon about the richest person on the planet would naturally have more than a few episodes with decent financial/economics themes.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
Same here bzial. Same here.
And Ludwig von Drake was partially inspired by Mises, and also had an awesome cartoon on money as well...unfortunately, the kids like Hannah Monanna so inflation cartoons go bye-bye :(
I have a tank full of gentle cuttlefish.
Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
bzial - man, when we were kids life was better, eh? Cartoons, money...everything.

Re: The Animation-Only Thread!
I just reviewed this one for the Cleveland film fest:
The quality isn't great, but isn't that always the way with YouTube...
I gave it effervescent praise. I am easily bought off by animation, especially if it is the good ole fashioned kind and not that gadawful CGI.
