Ooh, March Madness! Last year I was in a "Girly March Madness" pool, in which we all filled out our brackets with completely arbitrary picks. (For example, I choose against Butler because there's a feminist writer Judith Butler, who I hate!) We need a Freedom March Madness or something for grylliade.

I'll set one up on yahoo, and see if anyone signs up.

Oh, so now you're STEALING MY IDEAS.
tymac wrote:
Ok, you set it up then. And kindly put down the gun.
Rachel wrote:
I don't want to set it up. I'm a girl, I don't know how to do these things. I wouldn't even know how properly to word an annoucement about a basketball pool.
tymac wrote:
Have Rebecca do it. She's competent and somewhat sane. Some variation on "Hey, lets do a Grylliade NCAA Bracket! Sign up here." is all you need for wording. I doubt that we could organize one for actual cash, given the anonymity of our posters. You just don't want to be mailing checks over the internet, collecting would be a bitch, and federal law likely prevents there being a site where everyone could use something like pay pal.

Of course no money, but we could do it for libertarian credibility!
I actually used to be really into NBA in like, 1994-6. I don't know why.
tymac wrote:
Wouldn't libertarian credibility require that the most talented handicapper take the money of all the losers? Although, given the geek-based nature of cause, knowledge of sports could taint a person's libertarian cred.
Rachel wrote:
No, because we're not into taking other people's money. That's for the government to do silly.

I took the liberty of creating it. If you'd like to make the announcement, the league # 57522 and teh password is bacon. teams can register here http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/

Ha. You took the liberty! Can't I just post this whole thread of conversation about setting up a March Madness Pool? Because that would be awesome. Would it qualify as meta? What exactly is meta anyway?

Re: NCAA Brackets, per Rachel's request.
I see Butler is again in the tournament, so I can arbitrarily choose against them.

URGENT STUPID QUESTION: Are the Cavs still in the competition? In other words, would it be wrong to tell a huge Cavs fan "Go Cavs!" at this point in the season?

Um, would you be referring to the Cleveland Cavaliers (a professional NBA team) or the University of Virginia Cavaliers (which did not get an NCAA tournament bid) or some third unknown to me "Cavs"?

The Cleveland ones.

Re: NCAA Brackets, per Rachel's request.
I think they're still in the running for the playoffs.
The question was confusing, though, because the big college (i.e., non-professional -- well, officially not professional, anyway) tournament is going on right now and it does not, of course, include professional teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Re: NCAA Brackets, per Rachel's request.
Oh. I think I knew that, kind of. Thanks! Obviously I don't know anything about basketball, nor do I really care. I just didn't want to tell someone "Go Cavs" if the team was recently eliminated or something, because that could be misinterpreted as mockery. Apparently this "March Madness" doesn't even have anything to do with pro teams. *shrug* Oh well. It's almost Tribe time, and that's what's important.

Tribe time? Baseball, I assume. But, yes, March Madness is colleges only, no pro teams.

If the big dance invited the professional(?) NY Knicks, I figure they wouldn't get past the second round.

And yet Isiah would still get a contract extension just for beating Belmont.
Re: NCAA Brackets, per Rachel's request.
Looking at the "possible points" category in our NCAA bracket and my choices for the later round are all failing me, EXCEPT XAVIER. I picked Xavier for the sole reason of "I know a cat named Xavier!"
But Tennessee has disappointed me.

I always used to pick Xavier because of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
Re: NCAA Brackets, per Rachel's request.
Xavier is out. I'm crushed! I guess I lack libertarian credibility.

Yeah, try being an actual Tennessee fan. People were calling for Bruce Pearl's head the day after the loss.
I have a friend who's a BIG Xavier fan. Which is odd, because he never went to Xavier (Tennessee for undergrad and law school) and never lived near Cincinnati. Of course, he's also a Saints fan, with no connection to New Orleans. :-)

If Kansas wins, Ginslinger wins. At least I beat Rachel.
Re: NCAA Brackets, per Rachel's request.
So, uh, Rock Chalk? I'm not really a Jayhawk, but I have kinda adopted them as my college hoops team, since Wofford is unlikely to ever make an appearance in the brackets (same division as Davidson, but about 2/3 the size).
I was actually pulling for Davidson, if no other reasons than - always pull for the any school whose opponent's enrollment beats them by more than an order of magnitude, and they were one of my top three choices for college.

Yes, Lunchstealer, Rock Chalk!
But, seriously,
I will be as gracious in victory as tymac was in NFL Fantasy. Good job guys, Rachel had nearly as many correct picks as me, and tymac more. It was fun watching our brackets develop. As someone who was born less than two hours from Lawrence, though, and with one parent an alumni, I still must say: Rock Chalk!
