Ali, that is James Arness portraying Marshall Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke, which I believe is the longest running drama series in American TV history.

I was going to ask who is Marshall Matt Dillon, but, like a good boy, I decided to google him and save you the trouble (and save me Shem's slap on the back of my hand for my often silly questions).

Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
Matt is (I think) the guy I mentioned on the other thread where we were discussing newcomers to invite; he's "Other Matt" on Hit and Run (where he often gives much-needed asskickings to Joe) and "A Moose" on my blog and, occasionally, the Advocate.
Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
What, some sort of a blog version of multiple-identity Jason Bourne (I am too young for 007)?
Welcome Matt, whoever you really are, but especially if you are "Other Matt"!

Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
It's definitely him. I e-mailed the invitation today and he said he signed up.
Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
Now now, there's no such thing as a silly question. Just a silly person. And that doesn't seem to be you. Besides, I'm famous for being too lazy to look for things myself; just ask kwix.
Besides, if I had really wanted to deliver a slap on the wrist, I'd have sent you here.

Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
Haha.. are you saying that I am lazy?
Actually, I sometimes am!
When a student comes to me and say that s/he has a question that may be silly, I respond by saying a question is never silly unless you do not learn something from the answer. Shem and others around here have provided ample answers to my questions, and (I think), I have proved to myself that my questions are never silly :-)
EDIT: Plus, Google and other resources lack the interactivity that a human to human (virtual) exchange provides which makes the latter better than the former.

You answer questions? You're a really good teacher. I just made my students fight in Thunderdome to get their questions answered.

Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
I be the same.
Thanks, sorry if I was less mindful of my manners. Jennifer sent me an invite, but I had company over and didn't have time to look around after I signed up. There is no need for "Other Matt" here as I'm apparently the only one, so I dropped the "other" for the signup, not realizing I'd create confusion. As for the A Moose on Jennifer's blog, that was an inside joke thing from when she first started the blog (she actually picked the name, not me).

You should have seen the fun I had with a military ID that didn't say the same thing as my driver's license, trying to get into Camp David back in the just post Reagan/Bush v 1.0 era (when security actually meant something up there, under Clinton, not so much). It was a hoot (not) trying to explain to three well armed individuals that I really was who I was and I had business there...really, I did.
Thanks again.

Welcome, Aresen. Funny, for some reason I thought you were from Edmonton.
Welcome, Matt.
Liberals believe government should take people's earnings to give to poor people. Conservatives disagree. They think government should confiscate people's earnings and give them to farmers and insolvent banks. The weather's a little better in Victoria, eh? Although Calgary (though I'm not so sure about Edmonton - maybe to far north for the Chinook?) is right balmy compared to Regina (which is a pit for reasons having nothing to do with the weather).

I was in the second wave of immigrants, some months after the founding. (I needed help getting over the border, past the guards on my side of the corporate firewall. The Viking Moose arranged it for me.) I still feel like a lucky recent arrival, so I tend to be pro-immigrant.
However, I do worry about our little gulch becoming so populous that it suffers from sprawl, traffic congestion and crime. Perhaps we can preserve the character of our community with the right urban planning ...

Hi to DarkLustfulWoman! A question to David, though: what's up with the "not verified", and why doesn't she show up on the list of new users? New way of vetting new members?
Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even mo
Well, "DarkLustfulWoman" wasn't the only new user showing up. There was also another "DarkBroodingPerson" showing up at around the same time — the first new users we've had in two months, and they both show up within a minute of each other? Unlikely. So I deleted the accounts, which might have been rash. So, if DarkLustfulWoman wants to have posting permissions . . . sign back up.

Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
This thread would be a fine opportunity for SandorT to introduce him/herself with a short (minimum 5,000 words) essay descibing her/his past, life ambitions, political philosophy, number and age of offspring and prescribed medications currently used. Eye color and tongue length remain optional information of course.

Absence is not exactly evidence of mens rea. Maybe he(she?) just thought it would be a nice site to drop by occassionally. We've seen TWC once in the last 5 months, so I don't think it means anything.
OTOH, until SandorT shows up with a posting that shows he is not a troll, I'm not surrendering my nOOb card.
All I ask is a good horse and a fair day.
Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here (even more newer and
But we already knew TWC from Hit and Run. Does anybody know who SandorT even is?
Welcome back, my friends
No idea who he is. I have a vague feeling I've seen the handle before, but that could be due to a similarity.
Unless "Sandor" is a cognate of "Daniel", of course. ;)
EDIT: Checked a few name websites. "Sandor" is a South Slavic cognate of Alexander. Daniel is Hebrew in origin.
All I ask is a good horse and a fair day.
Re: Welcome back, my friends, to these here forums
Provisional greetings to SandorT! ("Provisional" pending verification that SandorT is actually a new member who appears here.)
I don't he would have access to the Inner Keep just because he registers as a member. I think David has to grant that kind of access manually.
And this may not mean anything, but the name "Sandor" probably has a proud history among online geeks. Apparently there was once a Usenet participant who was fabled for his reasonableness and wisdom. (Sort of like thoreau, but more famous, and not even a George W. would have been able to make him fly into a firespitting rage.) The guy's name (or one alias) was Herbert Spencer. I don't know what his e-mail handle was, but apparently it was similar to "sandor@zusomething" (?) because in the novel A Fire Upon the Deep, Vernor Vinge corrupted it into "Sandor at the Zoo" and used it as the name of the most reasonable and wise participant on the Galactic Net (inspired by Spencer). Maybe the SandorT handle is inspired by that.
Or maybe it's just some guy named Sandor.
