Just finished reading this book - any other fans of Hjortsberg or of this book here ? It was made into a decent movie called Angel Heart with Mickey Rourke. It can only be described as occult noir - I believe there are quite a few of those around now, but this was one of the earliest. Awesome noir work & very stylish prose. It kept me on the edge all the way thru' even though I knew the ending, having seen the movie a while back. Four stars.

dhex, if you liked the movie, check out the book. It's a movie all by itself, the book has that much ambience. I felt the film was much less effective than the book.

I picked this up on your recommendation, and I finished it this morning. I enjoyed it, and the writing style is interesting enough that I'll look for other books by Hjortsberg. Good book suggestion!
