World Travel IQ

Frank_A's picture

Lance from asecondhandconjecture.com brings attention to the world challenge IQ game here.
You can even add this quiz to your Facebook profile.

So far, I have a 125 Travel IQ on the World Challenge, and I'm beating the tar of almost all grylliader's except grylliade himself.

So, who wants to steal my crown of glory hmm?

Re: World Travel IQ

This looks like a potentially fascinating time-sink -- but also educational.

In my first attempt, I don't think I even got to the point where I got a score. I just got to a point where I was told I need at least 3,000 points to continue, or something like that.

So I guess I rank as "Australopithecine."

EDIT: Also, I confused the point score with the IQ score. (For a second, I was really proud of myself for scoring 20,000+ points when you guys were only reporting scores of around 100.) Also, the first time I didn't hit "continue" to get to the final panel with my travel IQ.

I just played again and got an IQ score of 93. What really threw me were the island nations/locations -- I just clicked somewhere in an ocean, and even when I knew approximately where the islands were, I was still likely to be thousands and thousands of miles off. Also, once I accidentally clicked on the Korean peninsula instead of Vietnam, even though I knew better. The "timer" freaks me a little bit.

I got a 130 (yeah!) though Africa nearly killed me.

Re: World Travel IQ

Apparently I'm as good at this game as I am at bowling -- I can't break 100. This time I got 94.

Africa really screws me. And I messed up big time when I thought East Timor was in Africa instead of in the neighborhood of Indonesia/Australasia.

I got up to 110. I have a tendency to confuse South American and African countries sometimes.

I'm going to stop now.

Darn you, Frank, for finding this and bringing it to my attention.

Re: World Travel IQ

114. I actually did a good job of getting the right countries (even in Africa and the former Soviets), but my guess as to city locations was usually the completely wrong side of the country.

Re: World Travel IQ

My most recent attempt was 111, thanks to my strategy of "click in the middle of the country and hope it averages out" and secondary strategy of "if you haven't heard of the country, click in northwestern Africa."

Of course, the game helped me along with such encouraging comments as "This is Earth -- you know that, right?" "Anybody home?" and "Holy geez, you're terrible!"

Re: World Travel IQ

112 on my first try. Africa usually kills me, although there were a couple times I placed some tiny island in the wrong hemisphere... And come on, Ireland is all of three pixels wide here. If you know where Ireland is at all, you know where Killarney, Ireland is.

Re: World Travel IQ

111 on try one, progressively worse each time following. Africa and the Soviet kills me.

Stevo Darkly's picture

Re: World Travel IQ

My personal best is still 113.

Must ... remember ... where Easter Islands are! Keep clicking on wrong ocean!

EDIT: Easter Island is. They is just one.

Re: World Travel IQ

136, although I accidentally double-clicked on the 'ok' button and ended up putting one I knew in the middle of the Indian Ocean by accident in round twelve, which probably cost me about 4000 points, and I ended up with 56000 out of 60000 needed to 'beat' level twelve, which pissed me off.

Damn! Only two days and Cesar steals my moment in the sun, and then lunchstealer mocks me with his "I got to level 12, neener, neener, neener."
(kicks pebble)

Like everyone else, I have a lot of trouble with Africa, but all the islands in the Carribean and the Pacific really need to die...
Surprisingly, I do pretty well with ye olde Soviet Union since I always thought all the 'Stans had nifty names...

Re: World Travel IQ

Dammit! I keep forgetting that El Salavador is in Central America -- not an island in the Carribean; that's San Salvador!

Or maybe it's the other way around.

San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador.

Damn you Frank, that is a serious time waster. I keep getting stuck on level ten, but it takes *soooo* long to get there. That game needs a level save so I can just start at level 9 each time.

My scores are from 110-118.

And an island -- I guess that's why I get confused.

So far, I can't break 113. Although I thought I got as high as level 12 once.

Darn you, Frank, for this evil you have unleashed upon the world!

I did it a while ago. I first beat level 11, and then after a few tries, finally beat level 12.

Apparently I have spent my entire life thinking that both Grenada and Brunei are in places that are nowhere near where I thought they were.

I nailed Edinburgh and the capital of Kyrgyzstan within 4 km! No shit! I knew where Edinburgh was. The other was a bit of luck really.

Some of the more obscure African countries did me in, but the old soviet republics were kind to me. Also, the western eurocentric prejudice of my youth caused me some problems. I kept being one country off.

Oh yeah, I bombed out at level 11.
