What Did You Think Of The Kite Runner? (Warning: Contains plot spoilers)

So, I just got done reading this. To be honest, I was slightly disappointed. I think it was hyped to me just a bit too much. It does a good job of being fairly depressing at times but I felt the author undermined the power of the book with a lot of unnecessary melodramatic touches. Having the Taliban official who purchased Hassan's son be Assef the rapist was irritating to me. It came off less as Amir "coming full circle" and a bit too contrived (or Unity of Plot and Character if you prefer) for my tastes.

The transition between the childhood and return to Afghanistan was all a bit abrupt too, I thought. I didn't think it was bad. The fact that it invoked emotion in me was proof enough that it was weaving an engaging enough story, I just, I don't know, was expecting something that was going to totally blow me away rather than something that came off somewhat as Dickens Does Kabul.

I liked it. Maybe it wasn't "Great Literature" but it had enough twists to keep me going.

His newest book is also good, if you like something on the theme of "How can we make this bad situation even worse by the end of each chapter?"

Re: What Did You Think Of The Kite Runner? (Warning: Contains pl

I was describing the plot of the Kite Runner to my wife and she stopped me and said, "Why would you tell me about something so depressing?"

I just shrugged and said, "Modern Afghanistan."
